French

Why study French?

French is part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum and is also available as a Key Stage 4 option subject.

The world is so much bigger than the small town of Runcorn that we live in. Learning French at The Heath gives us the opportunity to learn about not only French culture, but Francophone values and traditions. It opens our eyes to how other people live their lives and we can compare some of their core values with our own.

The skills of learning French are plentiful and speaking a second language enables us to become better communicators – which is essential in nearly every career we might want to pursue in the future! Colleges, universities and employers recognise the importance of speaking another language and knowledge of this can help open doors to job opportunities that you might not have had access to otherwise. There are a number of jobs that require a basic proficiency in another language. In this global world, the more people that you can communicate with, the more valuable you are as an employee. You may even earn a larger salary because of your French knowledge!

There are 31 countries in the world that have French as an official language. Knowing the language will make your travel experiences in France, Canada, Africa and some beautiful islands such as the Seychelles, much easier. A good grasp of the French language will be a valuable window into helping you learn about the culture of the areas you visit, which will truly enhance your travel experience.

Learning French also helps us to understand our own language as many of the words we speak have their roots in Latin, just like French! Once we have the basic skills of foreign language learning, understanding another one becomes easier. Therefore, the possibilities of where you can go and what you can do in the world is endless!

And, of course, it’s fun!
