Why study Food and Nutrition?

Food & Nutrition is part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum and is also available as a Key Stage 4 option subject.

  • To help students recognise that food is a basic requirement of life and should be enjoyed.
  • To have hands-on experiences with food.
  • To learn about and gain confidence in basic food hygiene and preparation skills.
  • To learn about healthier eating through practical food work.
  • To help students develop an understanding of the underlying scientific principles upon which current issues in nutrition are based.
  • To inform about methods of food production and food processing in domestic and commercial situations.
  • To encourage an awareness of social, economic and cultural aspects of food choice.
  • To enable students to demonstrate and apply appropriate knowledge of concepts and principles when planning and preparing meals and when making food choices.
  • To apply simple budgeting skills to food choices they make.
  • To work independently and in small groups to develop understanding of wider needs.
  • To become a better informed consumer.
