Letter to Parents – Internet Safety

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are aware that this week there have been several trolling accounts set up on Social Media sites which are targeting students across the Borough and beyond, some of whom are our students. These are anonymous accounts set up with the intention of creating discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people.

We are working alongside Cheshire Police to ensure that these accounts are traced and removed from Social Media as quickly as possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help and support in dealing with this situation.

Firstly, please speak to your son/daughter about their Social Media activities and offer them the following advice:

  • ensure they keep personal information private – advise that they don’t post private information about themselves online that can be used by trolls to attack them.
  • Make sure they are careful who they are talking to.

If your son/daughter is subject to abusive comments on any Social Media Network please report this to the site as abusive immediately. Take screen shots (photographs) of any comments made – these can be sent to Sam Jones at school joness@heathschool.org.uk We advise that you do not respond or retaliate.

Further advice can be found at: http://www.knowthenet.org.uk/knowledge-centre/trolling/advice-parents

Yours sincerely,

J Jardine
