History

Why study History?

History is part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum and is also available as a Key Stage 4 option subject. For interested Key Stage 3 students (and some dedicated Key Stage 4 students!) we also offer an extra-curricular 'Horrible Histories' club.

The simple answer to this question is that you need to! Here’s why:

• History is the amazing study of human kind and how they have lived in the past, their interactions, their reasons for living the way they have, their kindness, their cruelness and their triumphs and disasters.
• Studying the changing attitudes to politics, civil rights, social and moral issues, religion and culture help us understand who we are in today’s world.
• Learning from the past helps us to avoid the mistakes of our forefathers, for example, studying how Hitler gained power will help to prevent something like this happening again, helping us to shape our own future.
• History encourages students to develop a tolerance of other people`s reasonable views whilst understanding the damage extreme and evil views can have.
• The study of History develops vital skills to fulfil successful careers and become rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society.
• History students develop skills in many areas such as enquiry, using evidence to support or disprove theories, to frame and maintain arguments and to develop literacy skills to write in an extended form. Colleges and employers want students with these skills.
